We are stoked to finally be able to speak about this one…

ALUULA and Scandinavia’s award-winning outdoor travel brand Db, have collaborated on Db’s latest collection: Weigh Lighter. An innovative five-piece collection designed for rugged mountaineering conditions.

All five pieces (a pack, split duffel, helmet bag, sling and snow roller) have been made using ALUULAs 100% UHMWPE Graflyte™ fabric.

To hear more about the inspiration behind this awesome collection, we caught up with Db’s Senior Designers, Hunter Nordhauser & Benedicte Eggesvik.

How did you first hear about ALUULA?

We met ALUULA at ISPO 2020 and were very intrigued with what the fabric offered. We were looking for the opportunity to make a product that stood out from the crowd, had a good brand fit with shared goals and values. The timing aligned.

What drew you to this ultralight, high-performance fabric?

ALUULA’s ultralight strength-to-weight, durability, seam stability, mono-materiality, combined with translucency let us push design boundaries—reducing weight without sacrificing performance, inherently creating a bold aesthetic combined with Db’s unique technologies.

What unique performance properties stood out?

We were fascinated by ALUULA’s adhesive and glue free material. The ability to head-weld and bond together made construction lighter and stronger. Its extreme strength forced us to rethink cutting and stitching techniques, and its transparency added a design element we hadn’t experimented with before.

What inspired the ‘Weigh Lighter’ collection?

Weigh Lighter is Db´s take on minimalistic mountaineering bags. Using our knowledge from our The Fjall ski-mountaineering pack, we reimagined what it would look like in a lightweight expression, then turning it into a capsule collection – sourcing the lightest, durable fabric out there to designing a capable collection for the extreme conditions.

Can you walk us through the collection’s design?

The collection reinterprets Db’s signature elements into lightweight expressions, combining outdoor performance with material experimentation and construction.

Each piece serves a distinct function:

Backpack

A mountain pack that can be used on smaller expeditions as well as everyday use.

Sling

A lightweight touring sling for backcountry touring, hiking and your new small travel pouch.

Helmet Bag

The bag for all your equipment going skiing doubles up as your everyday friend and will be the water cooler topic in the office.

Split Duffel

The expedition companion you never want to leave behind. Room for all your gear and light as a feather.

Snow Roller

The lightest, most durable version of our iconic compressible and length-adjustable ski and snowboard roller.

What were your key design goals?

Evolving and reinterpreting technologies such as our Rib-Cage System utilizing ALUULA’s unique properties

Significant weight reduction, designed to be Weigh Lighter than our inline products
New expansion / compression features like roll tops and the “crow claw” gusset.
Functional transparency—strategic revealing and concealing.

Did you change your approach to design using ALUULA?

Yes. Its stiffness and strength required us to rethink our approach to patterning, cutting, and stitching. We adjusted machine settings and experimented with transparency to establish a clear hierarchy between visible and hidden elements. Throughout the design process, ALUULA worked with us, helping to tackle the challenges of scaling production.

We love it when brands use innovative construction techniques with our fabric, what techniques did you use?

We leveraged ALUULA’s adhesive free composite textile to reduce material use while maintaining durability. While high-wear areas still required stitching, we utilized hot and cold press bonding to improve strength and durability where it was needed. The process takes longer in an assembly line yet delivers superior results.

How did the ALUULA team contribute to the process?

This was a true collaboration. We worked together to refine bonding temperatures, cutting, durability testing, and mass production techniques. It was a shared journey of innovation. We’re excited to see what we explore next together.
